Dewey Caruthers
President and CEO
Dewey Caruthers is a senior-level social marketing strategist. He has worked on prevention campaigns that are among the nation's most successful in addressing tobacco and obesity.
Dewey worked on the national 'truth' anti-tobacco campaign, as well as for numerous highly successful state tobacco prevention campaigns, including being the chief strategist for the West Virginia campaign that over three years reduced teen cigarette use by 33 percent and teen smokeless tobacco use by 38 percent.
Dewey applied some of the best practices from 'truth'-style teen tobacco prevention campaigns, in an age-appropriate manner, to childhood obesity campaigns targeted at 4th and 5th graders. The result is Kidz Bite Back, a kid-created, kid-led, kid-spread movement that is a national promising practice using counter-marketing, peer-to-peer communications and grassroots efforts. He also created Parents Step Up (Familias en Marcha in Spanish), a hard-hitting, parental responsibility and accountability campaign.
Additionally, Dewey is president of dewey & associates, a 10-year-old-old strategic planning firm, which helps non-profits, public-private partnerships, and small fast growth companies.
Prior to founding d&a, Dewey was a senior executive at Take Stock in Children, Florida's highly successful and innovative college scholarship and mentoring program for low-income youth. Additionally, Dewey has been a vice president at two of Florida's largest independent public relations firms: Tucker/Hall based in Tampa; and The Nixon Group of Miami (later sold to Gole & Harris). As a senior-level strategist, he managed national, regional and state accounts. He also served as the State Director of Marketing, Public Relations and Public Affairs for the American Heart Association in Florida.
Dewey has a Master's Degree in Organizational Management and a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. He is 47-years-old and has lived in Florida for the past 20 years. He has a seven-year-old daughter named Violet; a four-year-old daughter named Scarlet; an obese, ill-tempered cat named Zu Zu Petals; and a puggle named Hemingway (got her in Key West).
